TNR Trap-Neuter-Return

OUR MISSION

Help Us Reduce The Feral Cat Population

TNR is a humane, safe way to control overpopulation.

WHAT IS TNR

(T)Trap - (N)Neuter - (R)Return

TNR or Trap-Neuter-Return is when a feral or community cat is trapped, neutered or spayed, vaccinated, and then returned to its colony where it can live out a full, healthy, non-reproductive life.

Why is the tip of that cat's ear missing?

Ear tipping is a procedure performed on cats that removes the tip of the left ear. This is done to show that the cat has been spayed or neutered. It is performed while they are under anesthesia for their spay or neuter surgery. It is a very common practice in TNR.

How can I help?

The best way to help is to ensure that your cats are  spayed or neutered. This is true even for indoor-only  cats. As we all know, cats can be sneaky. The door only  has to be open for a moment for your cat to escape and  come back pregnant.

the benefits of TNR

How Does TNR Help The Cats & The Community?

Population estimates vary widely by location, but outdoor cats are found in almost every neighborhood across the U.S. These cats include community cats—friendly stray or abandoned cats as well as feral (unsocialized) cats—and owned cats let outside to roam and reproduce. There are currently approximately 60 million feral cats in the United States alone.

One female cat can give birth to an average of 12-18 kittens per year and can become pregnant as young as 5-months-old. This means numbers can multiply quickly adding to the already overwhelmed population of feral or community cats. When kittens are caught early, they have a chance to be socialized and adopted, but older feral cats are considered unadoptable if taken to a shelter and are unfortunately usually euthanized. Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized, over half of which are cats. TNR seeks to humanely reduce the number of feral or community cats while increasing their quality of life.

TNR is endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association and is the least costly, as well as the most efficient and humane way of stabilizing and ultimately reducing the feral cat population. Spaying and neutering also reduces undesirable behaviors from cats which also reduces the number of complaint calls made to animal control. Some may think that it’s easier to take matters into their own hands and kill the cats, but it doesn’t work. Cats are territorial and when one is removed from a colony another will just take its place. It is much better and more humane to enlist the services of a local TNR group.
